The Incredible Rise of Diabetes in the United States

NPR had a great post dissecting the rise of diabetes in America in the last twenty years. Check out the graphic representation of the increase, it looks pretty frightening visually:

1995:

Diabetes prevalence in 1995

2000:

Diabetes prevalence in 2000

2005:

And, finally, 2010:

Basically: Yikes. And Happy Thanksgiving!

Truly shocking, especially the rates for young children and adolescents that are on the rise! I’m doing a presentation on Diabetes in class tomorrow and 1 particular article about 1,400 4th graders in Texas was very disturbing. Many kids aren’t even given a fighting chance! Poverty, lack of access to healthy foods, no P.E. requirements, high crime neighborhoods, and easy access to fast, cheap food are all against many out there. Thanks for posting this!
